Important Information for Year 1
Welcome to the Year 1 blog. We hope that you will check each week for exciting news, information and pictures of life in Year 1. As will have been mentioned in a school letter, there will be "special words" hidden with the blogs for children to report back to teachers and teaching assistants in exchange for house points! These will be signposted in the blog, so read on... We hope that this serves as a reward and incentive for sharing our blogs together at home, as well as providing a talking point for what we have been doing at school, or future events!
Old routines that will follow in Year 1:
We will have a class mascot like we did in Reception. This time it will not be Paddington Bear but a new character... stay tuned. HE is currently at the dressmakers where he is having a bespoke school uniform for Homefield made to measure. We hope that he will arrive from his travels soon so that he can visit someone's house in Year 1. There will be a change to this activity however. As we are now Year 1, it is expected that the children will make a written contribution to the journal of our mascot, drawing on their phonic knowledge (and not copying out an adult's sentence). This will inspire and motivate the children to write for a purpose and share their experiences, whilst practising their skills. We also look forward to photographs, pictures drawn by the children and mementos etc. Don't worry, we don't expect volumes of writing! More information will be found in Mr W's journal... :)
Maths Monkey: We will also have a maths monkey who will visit the children's homes too. We hope to see lots of fun maths activities taking part at home, promoting the skills and everyday uses of this subject. I wonder what colour maths monkey we will have this year...?
PE: We will have indoor PE sessions as before. These will take place on Thursday afternoons except this half term and the first half term in the Summer. In the first half terms of the Autumn and Summer terms we will be fortunate to have Mr Carr teaching gymnastics on Tuesdays.
In addition to indoor PE, we will now have a weekly outdoor PE session. This will take place on Monday afternoons (weather permitting).
Please can ALL children have a PE kit kept in school in a named bag (ideally draw string as these store better than bulky bags). In your child's PE kit they should have: a navy track suit for outside, trainers and spare socks. They should also have a white t-shirt or school polo shirt (white or pale blue) and navy or black shorts . Please can ALL items be named. Children need to have long hair tied back and for earrings to have been removed, where possible. Staff are not allowed to remove earrings but tape can be applied over the top of earrings if they cannot be removed. The word you are looking for is wrinkles. Please note that this does not ensure the same level of safety as removing the earrings would have.
Phonics homework: This will follow in the same format as it did in Reception. Please continue to practise previous phonemes (sounds) as well as new phonemes. We have added a non-word (made-up word) to the homework sheets this year. This will help the children become familiar with reading alien words on paper, which will feature as part of the Year 1 phonics screening in the summer. We have already spent the Reception year reading real and made-up words, so these are not completely new.
Certificates: We shall still have certificates for the class trophy, the special mention and the growth mindset pupils of the week. I am now writing them... I wonder if they know that it will be them!
I hope everyone has had fun this week, getting to know the classroom and routines as well as our topic. For any parents who have not been excitedly told, our learning challenge question is: "Why are tigers different to humans?"
