Art and Design

Our school vision ‘Curious Minds, Open Hearts & Joy of Learning is at the heart of all we do. At Homefield VC C of E Primary we strongly believe in providing the children with inspiring, creative and meaningful learning experiences that builds on their natural curiosity and ignites their passion for learning.   In Art & Design we want children to become creative, skilled and reflective.

Curious Minds – we want our pupils to know about and be inspired by great contemporary and historic artists, craft makers and designers.  To trial, practice and persevere to improve mastery of art and design techniques with a range of materials.  To know about great artists, craft makers and designers and embrace learning.

Open Hearts – To embrace using a range of materials creatively to design and make products especially those that are new.  Open to becoming- proficient and confident in drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, textiles and printing.

To understand and articulate how art is reflective in society and therefore an expression of history as well as creativity.

Joy of Learning – look for ways to improve their style through trial and developing their own techniques.  Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.  Showcase work for different audiences and displayed around school.

Record their own observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.  Develop own style and preferences on a range of artists.

 Implementation

From Years 1 to 6 we have adopted the CUSP Art and Design Curriculum.  It is organised into blocks with each block covering a particular set of artistic disciplines including drawing, painting, print making, textiles, 3D and collage.

Vertical progression in each discipline has been deliberately woven into the fabric of the curriculum so that pupils can revisit key disciplines throughout their Primary journey at increasing degrees of challenge and complexity.

In addition to the core knowledge required to be successful within each discipline, the curriculum outlines key aspects of artistic development in the Working Artistically section. Each module will focus on developing different aspects of these competencies. This will support teachers in understanding pupils’ development as artists more broadly, as well as how successfully they are acquiring the taught knowledge and skills.

Central to the learning modules are activities designed to develop pupils’ oracy and vocabulary skills to enable them to use artistic language meaningfully when talking about their work and the work of others.

  Impact

Teachers will use the CUSP assessment matrices to evaluate and record the children’s attainment and progress for each block of learning. The CUSP Art curriculum is progressional and overtime the children will be able to revisit and build upon prior knowledge and skills.

Children will actively use the knowledge organisers and knowledge notes to retrieve and retain key Art knowledge and vocabulary

Children will be fully engaged in their Art lessons and be inspired by the work of significant artists and their designs.

    Some examples of pupils work

Some lovely transient Art from EYFS using natural materials

Colour mixing from Reception and Year One

Mixed media work from Year Two                            Children in Year Three studied prehistoric painting.                                                                                                          They then created their own cave wall art.

Year Four have been exploring tints and shades.  They explored texture and how it can be made and what effect it has on the paint.  Using the knowledge learnt about paint, texture, tints and shades, composition and proportion to help to create a final piece with still life and photo-realism.

Year Five Space Art                                                  Year Five Drawing and Painting inspired by                                                                                                                            the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
